(i) What enlightenment does the writer seek from his wife? What does it suggest about the plight of the modern man?
(ii) What happened to the tree referred to by Mr. Johnson?
(iii) How did the narrator make the tiny baby squirrel hale and hearty?
Ans.
(i) In the cinema he found himself in a hopeless fog but he asked his wife sitting beside him about a certain girl in the scene. His wife told him clearly. So he finds that there someone has a mind which has trained itself to work in high gear, though as a matter of fact it can work in other gears, just as well.
For the modern man it suggests to think in fast enough to keep up comfortably.
(ii) When Jim went to Mr. Johnson’s house, he preached to him about ecology. He reminded him that trees must be saved for ecology preservation. Hearing Jim’s comments on the importance of trees, Mr. Johnson referred to a tree near Jim’s house. Jim made a path taking a shortcut from Ms Greene’s house. There was a little tree near the path. It was getting bigger but Jim killed it by trying to jump over it every day. Mr. Johnson reminded Jim that he preached about the importance of trees but he himself destroyed a growing tree.
(iii) The narrator brought the tiny baby squirrel to her room. She wiped the blood from his wounds with cotton wool, applied penicillin ointment. Thus first of all she nursed him and then she tried to feed him. Only after several hours of tending she could manage to pour one drop of water in his mouth. Thus the tiny baby gradually became much better. Then be became pet and liked to eat Kaju. Such things made him hale and hearty.
