Nalanda was called one of the first great universities in History. Some buildings were constructed by the Aryan Emperor Ashoka the Great. The complex was built with red bricks and its ruins occupy and area of 14 hectares. The university attracted, scholars and students from as far away as China. Greece and Parsia. Nalanda was destroyed by Turkish invaders under Baktiyar Khilji. The great library of Nalanda University was so vast that it is reported to have burnt for three months after the invaders set it to fire. Due to this, Nalanda lost its importance as a world class learning centre of that time.
