(i) The terms and conditions of the bet were decided by the lawyer and the banker. it was agreed that the lawyer would remain in a cell in the banker’s house for fifteen years. The banker agreed to give him two million roubles. It was decided that during the period of confinement the lawyer would not be allowed to see people, to hear human voice and to receive letters and newspapers. He was permitted to have a musical instrument, to read books, to write letters, to drink wine and to smoke tobacco. If the lawyer escaped from the cell before the fixed time, the banker would not pay him two million roubles.

(ii) Mr Gessler was a German shoemaker who had settled in London. He was a perfect artist. He made only what was ordered. The boots made by him were of high quality but he

never advertised his boots. His shops did not seem to be impressive. He worked hard but he took a long time to make one pair of boots. He was slow at work. He worked on boots by himself. His work style was unique. He had the same skill and pride in his work as any other artist. So, the boots made by him not only fitted perfectly well but also lasted very long.
