Answer any one of the following questions:

(i) The bond between the mother and her daughter in the story “Two Horizons’ is very strong. The mother is the traditional Indian woman while her daughter is the modern woman. The daughter considers her mother to be an ideal woman. After some time she is filled with a sense of weariness and emptiness. She writes a letter to her mother, telling her that she has failed to achieve her fulfillment in her mind.

The mother consoles her daughter by telling her that the circle of fulfilment is limited while unfulfilment is boundless. She reminds her that she will have to seek the key to fulfilment within herself.

(ii) It is a fact that animal also possess the ability to understand human feelings. It is very well illustrated in the story “January Night”. Halku has a pet dog. Halku calls him by name “Jabra”. Jabra remains with his master day and night. He guards Halku’s crops in the field keenly and dutifully. One January night Halku goes to guard his harvest in the field with Jabra. He is shivering due to biting cold. Halku affectionately pets his head Jabra feels pleasure in his master’s lap. Suddenly Nilgais (some wild animals) broke into the field. Jabra tries his best to chase them away, but failed. Halku does not go to the field due to biting cold. Nilgais graze his harvest and devastate his field. Jabra lays stretched out underneath the shelter as though he is dead. This act of duty and alertness shows that animals possess the ability to understand human feelings.
